Common questions

Individual Counselling FAQs

Choosing to start counselling often comes with questions. Here you’ll find answers to some of the most common questions about individual counselling, online and in-person sessions, confidentiality, fees and what you can expect when working together.

Individual counselling is a confidential, one-on-one process that provides a supportive space to explore your thoughts, emotions and experiences. Together, we’ll work to better understand the challenges you’re facing, identify unhelpful patterns and develop practical strategies to help you navigate life with greater confidence and resilience. Every counselling journey is tailored to your individual needs and goals.

The number of sessions varies from person to person and depends on your goals, the challenges you’re facing and the support you need. Some people benefit from a few focused sessions, while others find ongoing counselling helpful for deeper personal growth or long-term support. We regularly review your progress together and adjust the process as needed.

Yes. Confidentiality is a fundamental part of counselling, and what you share remains private. The only exceptions are situations where there is a legal or ethical obligation to disclose information, such as if there is a serious risk of harm to yourself or someone else, or where required by law. These limits to confidentiality will be discussed during your first session.

Individual counselling sessions may be claimed from Medical Aid where your plan includes benefits for counselling services. As benefits differ between providers and plans, it’s recommended that you contact your Medical Aid directly to confirm your available cover before your appointment.

Your first session is an opportunity for us to get to know one another. We’ll talk about what has brought you to counselling, explore your current concerns and discuss what you hope to achieve. There is no pressure to share everything at once. We move at a pace that feels comfortable for you while beginning to develop a plan for future sessions.

Yes. Counselling can help you better understand the factors contributing to stress and anxiety, identify patterns that may be maintaining them and develop healthier ways of responding. Together, we’ll explore practical strategies that support your emotional wellbeing while building resilience for future challenges.

Yes. Secure online counselling sessions are available for individuals anywhere in South Africa, providing the same confidential and supportive experience as in-person sessions. Online counselling offers flexibility for those with busy schedules, travel commitments or who prefer attending sessions from the comfort of their own space.

You don’t need to be experiencing a crisis to benefit from counselling. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, struggling with stress or anxiety, navigating relationship challenges, processing a difficult experience or simply wanting to understand yourself better, counselling can provide a supportive space to explore what’s happening and move forward with greater clarity. If you’re unsure, you’re welcome to get in touch to discuss whether individual counselling is the right fit for your needs.
