Couples Counselling FAQs
Starting couples counselling is an important decision, and it’s natural to have questions. Here you’ll find answers to some of the most common questions about the counselling process, what to expect during sessions, online and in-person appointments, and whether couples counselling is the right fit for your relationship.
Couples counselling is a supportive space where both partners can explore relationship challenges with a trained counsellor. Sessions help couples understand communication patterns, recurring conflict, emotional distance, trust concerns, and unmet needs. The process focuses on helping both partners feel heard, understand each other better, and develop healthier ways of relating.
In the first couples counselling session, both partners have space to share what brought them to counselling and what they hope to work on. The session focuses on understanding each person’s perspective, identifying key relationship patterns, and setting initial goals. It also gives you a sense of the counselling process.
The length of couples counselling depends on the couple’s goals, the concerns being addressed, and how long certain patterns have been present. Some couples attend a few focused sessions, while others prefer ongoing support. The first session helps clarify what you want to work on and what process may be most helpful.
Yes. Communication problems are one of the most common reasons couples seek counselling. Sessions can help partners slow down difficult conversations, express needs more clearly, listen with more understanding, and recognise patterns that lead to conflict or disconnection. The aim is to support healthier, more constructive communication between both partners.
Yes. Relationship counselling can help couples work through the impact of broken trust, betrayal, or infidelity. While rebuilding trust takes time, counselling can provide a supportive space to explore what happened, improve communication, rebuild emotional safety, and determine how to move forward together.
Yes. Some couples attend counselling because they feel uncertain about the future of their relationship or are considering separation. Counselling can provide a neutral space to explore concerns, better understand each other’s perspectives, and gain clarity about the path forward, whether that involves rebuilding the relationship or making informed decisions about the future.
Yes. Couples counselling is available for dating couples, engaged couples, married couples, and long-term partners. You do not need to be married to seek support. Many couples attend counselling to strengthen their relationship, understand each other better, work through recurring challenges, or prepare for a more committed stage of their relationship.
Yes. Online couples counselling is available for couples in Johannesburg and across South Africa. Online sessions can be helpful for couples with busy schedules, travel limitations, or partners in different locations. Sessions still provide a structured and supportive space to work through communication, conflict, trust, and connection concerns.
